When it comes to building the ultimate bow, without a doubt it’s got to have speed, a smooth draw-cycle, tack-driving accuracy, and a dead-silent shot….all wrapped up in a light-weight package. After two decades of designing and manufacturing the most advanced bows in the industry, Mathews has once again raised the bar.
Easy to draw and a pleasure to shoot.
While many bows on the market can claim high speed ratings, very few can offer such performance in a bow that is easy to draw and a pleasure to shoot. However, Mathews owners are never forced to compromise between smooth shooting characteristics and fast arrow speed. Thanks to ingenious cam designs and the revolutionary Reverse Assist Roller Guard (which replaces old-fashioned cable rods and slides), harsh draw-cycles and speed no longer go hand-in-hand. The major advantage of the Reverse Assist Roller Guard is that it reduces friction; resulting in much smoother draw cycle by positioning cables in a reverse manner; in front rather than behind the roller guard. Traditional roller guards position cables on the back side of the roller guard and cause the cables to wrap tighter as the bow is drawn back and therefore places more pressure on the cables. The Reverse Assist Roller Guard allows the cable to roll with less tension in a fully contained roller guard and ultimately makes the bow smoother since there is less tension on the cable.
Just like speed and accuracy, a quiet shooting bow is a must.
When it comes to quiet performance, Mathews is the industry leader. Matt McPherson realized early on the sound squashing affect that parallel limbs could have on bow design as well as their affect on speed and efficiency. In 1996, Mathews introduced the Signature. This bow featured a proportionately longer riser and shorter, more parallel limbs. Because the limbs were more parallel than other bows at the time, the vibration and recoil generated by each was effectively canceled.
Since that time, Mathews bows have continuously featured limbs that become more and more parallel. Today, the limbs on Mathews bows have gone beyond Parallel, resulting in an even longer riser and therefore increased stability. As a result, these bows are the quietest, most vibration free bows ever. With the launching of the Harmonic Damping System in 2000, a new era of quiet, vibration-free shooting was born. Never before had a technology made such an impact not only within the archery community, but outside it as well. Today, the Harmonic Damping System is one of the most recognizable and effective bow accessories on the market. Additionally, the Harmonic Stabilizer, Monkey Tails, String Suppressor and String Grubs combine to make the quietest-shooting bows on the market.
What good is speed without accuracy?
When it comes to shooting precision, the key is in the DNA. You see, Mathews bows are engineered to be accurate. This is evident in their forgiving Brace Height, long, stable Grid Lock risers, and the SlimFit Inline and Focus grips; both of which greatly reduce bow-hand torque.

This is the heart of Mathews innovation. It is what inspires Mathews founder Matt McPherson to continuously develop and refine the compound bow.
Since the single cam’s groundbreaking inception in 1992, the benefits were obvious. Not only were the synchronization problems of the two-cam system eliminated, but a number of other advantages were quickly realized. Over the years, Mathews’ single-cam bows have proven to be more efficient, more accurate, more forgiving, produce less vibration and recoil, are quieter, and require less maintenance than any other cam system available today. In addition, the single cam has also proven to be fast. The Max Cam, introduced in 1997, and most recently, the SimPlex™ Cam, are both testaments to the amazing speeds that are attainable with this simple, yet highly effective system.
In 2009, Mathews once again made history with the introduction of the McPherson Series, Dual Cam line. The McPherson Series bows featured the new AVS system resulting in the fastest and highest performing dual-cam bows in the archery industry.
In addition to advancements in cam technology, it should also be noted that the bow string, particularly the material it is made of, also influences bow speed. While most bow hunters sacrifice string stretch for increased speed, Mathews owners are never forced to compromise.
Careful engineering is what made the long riser/light weight combination possible.
In an effort to make bow limbs more parallel, the riser got longer. This meant that while Mathews bows were getting quieter, they were also becoming a bit heavier. Matt McPherson realized this needed to be changed. The Ultra Light, introduced in 1995, was a tremendous hit with bow hunters across the nation. At 3 ½ pounds and shooting 300 fps, this innovative design quickly ushered in the demand for shorter, lighter, and faster bows. What made the Ultra Light’s weight even more remarkable was the fact that the bow featured a longer riser than other bows on the market.
Careful engineering is what made the long riser/light weight combination possible. This meant that risers could be made longer, which added more shooting stability, while still keeping overall bow-weight to a minimum.
In 2010, Mathews introduced the distinctively looking Grid Lock riser on the Z7; the first member of the Mathews Z-Series bows. This new riser design was not only structurally stronger than previous efforts, it was substantially lighter.
For 2012, the riser will be lightened even more. Overall, the “Geo Grid” riser will weigh less than the previous Grid Lock riser while still maintaining its strength. In addition, other components have been trimmed down in order to give bow hunters the lightest rig possible. These include the Reverse Assist Roller Guard, the Dead End String Stop, and the Harmonic Stabilizer Lite; which, like the standard Harmonic Stabilizer, absorbs 75 % of residual vibration, but now does so at 1/3 the weight (nearly 70% lighter).

The new Focus Grip with patent pending Focus Ridge helps minimize hand torque in the event of poor hand placement by keeping pressure concentrated in the center of the grip, unlike typical flat top grips that move pressure to the outside edge which increases hand torque. It does this with a slightly higher portion of the grip which contacts the pressure point of the hand. This doesn’t allow the rest of the hand to come in contact with the grip; thus eliminating torque caused by poor hand placement.

In any cam system the forces that the cables exert on the cam are actually vectors. Vector is an engineering term which indicates that these forces have both direction and magnitude. While the magnitude of the force exerted by the power / buss cable increases as the bow is drawn, the direction of that force (in all previous designs) has been mainly determined by the distance between the centerline of the axle and the cable’s contact point on the take-up track of the cam. At no time since the conception of the compound bow has the anchor cable force vector been able to traverse from one side of the cam axle to the other. Mathews realized that this same limitation had been imposed on all of the previous compounding systems. The result of that realization was the introduction of another industry first, The Advanced Power Cable Vectoring System (AVS).
The new AVS system allowed Mathews to dynamically move the force vector of the anchored cable from one side of the cam axle to the complete other side of the axle. This gave engineers the ability to optimize draw force profiles for energy storage, maximum bow performance and efficiency. The result was that Mathews built the fastest and highest performing dual-cam bows in the archery industry. The new Advanced Vectoring System also allows Mathews Inc. to create the fastest, most efficient compound bows ever produced. The McPherson Series Monster and Monster XLR8 quickly proved that point; while at the same time maintaining 80% Let Off. All of which adds validity to the Mathews phrase “Catch us if You Can”.
Locking mechanisms on typical limbs merely set the limb in the adjoining limb pocket or attach the limb to the riser by a screw. The VLOCK limb system; however, takes the end of the limb; which resembles a V, and pushes the limb into the VLOCK area so that the end of the limb is perfectly aligned every time under pressure. The quad limbs also feature a reverse locking mechanism that keeps the limbs securely locked in place. This double-locking limb system locks the limb securely into a zero tolerance position.
Today’s bows have gotten so parallel that some bow presses actually can strain the limb and pull on the socket. The reverse lock prevents this from happening making the most durable marriage of both limb and riser.

String Grubs aid in reducing string vibration in order to gain more speed. The String Grub is an important component in this fully integrated system that makes the Reezen the fastest most efficient single cam bow in the world and the Monster the fastest, most efficient twin cam in the world.
Unlike other conventional drop away rests, the triggering cable on the DownForce attaches to the lower half of the bowstring, not the cable. Today the Harmonic Damping System is utilized in bow sights, rests, and even bicycle handles.

When the bow launches an arrow, the greatest portion of the energy stored in the bow is transferred to the arrow. However, the residual energy must be absorbed by the bow system and the archer. Mathews’ Harmonic Dampers are designed into the bow system (on the upper and lower portion of the riser) and are tuned to absorb a significant portion of the residual energy while it is still in the bow, before it can reach the shooter. The results in a bow that is smoother and more pleasurable to shoot.
At full draw, the Inertia Disc is poised to take a fast ride around the outside of the fully-cocked Mathews Cam. Like a rocket at take-off, momentum builds gradually because of the energy required to set the Inertia Disc in motion around the perimeter of the cam. A smooth take-off results in a smooth release. In the fall of 1995, Mathews introduced the Feather Light. It featured the ProCam, the first single cam with even tiller.
Mathews introduced the first carbon cable guard. It didn’t squeak in wet conditions like metal cable guards and was significantly lighter and stiffer, making for an all around better performing cable guard. It wasn’t long after competitors followed suit with their versions of Mathews’ pioneered carbon cable technology.
The unique and innovative Zebra ZS Twist Bowstring was created by twisting two separate string bundles in opposing directions of each other, helping to balance the complete bowstring.This minimized string rotation, reducing peep sight alignment problems. Likewise, the two cams are almost never in perfect synch which causes sharp deviation in the nock point travel path (affecting arrow speed and accuracy) as well as making the bow noisier and more difficult to tune. With just one cam to “fire,” a single cam bow can’t go out of synch and you never have to worry about inconsistent shooting. In addition, they have fewer variables. Therefore, there are fewer things that can go wrong on a single-cam bow. Because of that, they are naturally more dependable.
Over the years, advancements in the solo cam have improved performance, accuracy and overall shooting pleasure. In the fall of 1995, Mathews introduced the Feather Light. It featured the ProCam; the first ever dual-feed single cam with even tiller. The advantages of this design were quickly realized by tournament shooters who suddenly found themselves switching to the single-cam design in an effort to stay competitive on the pro circuit.
In addition to the many benefit’s the single-cam offered, Mathews realized the need to provide its shooters with something more….speed. Faster than any two cam system in its era, the Mathews Max Cam, introduced in 1997, set a new standard when it came to single-cam bow speed. The secret behind its success was a strategically placed tungsten carbide weight (Inertia Disc) on the perimeter of the cam. This “perimeter weighting” created a “flywheel effect” that lengthened and strengthened the cam’s power stroke, which dramatically increased arrow speed while at the same time reducing recoil. This meant Mathews shooters could experience increased arrow velocity without the “kick” most other cam systems generated.
The Max Cam spawned additional cam designs; each of which incorporated Perimeter Weighted Technology. At full draw, the Inertia Disc within the cam is ready to take a fast ride around the outside of the fully-cocked Mathews Cam. Matt McPherson, Founder and CEO, started making recurve and compound bows beginning in the 1970’s. Many designs and years later, McPherson decided to take one of his newest innovations, the Inner Cam (patent filed in approximately 1985) and started McPherson Archery. The company was later sold in 1989.
