Another reason to pattern your shotgun is that they are notorious for not hitting where aimed. First, they have a built in elevation for shot drop at 40 yds, so they shoot high in close. Secondly, there isn't much concern on the alignment of the barrel to the reciever if you are using a semi-auto or pump, so they very often shoot either left or right of where the beads line up.
