So… I woke up this morning around 5:30 am to hear on the Channel 7 news that one of my new students at my continuation school had been shot and killed by local sheriff’s deputies the previous day. He was 13 years old and had been at my school for a couple of days. He had been suspended from school for being off campus on Tuesday. He was sent home… at 3:30 he was out in a neighborhood with a realistic replica of an AK-47. A resident in the neighborhood called the police about a man with an assault rifle. Deputies found him and directed him to put the weapon down. When he didn’t comply, they shot him multiple times, when he went down, they handcuffed him first and then started to administer first aide. He died where he fell…. I’m angry that a 13 year old kid is dead… I’m angry that he didn’t comply… I’m angry that two deputies felt they had to fire in this situation… I’m saddened they have to live with this…I’m angry that two deputies are now on Administrative leave as the department tries to figure out just what went wrong… I’m angry that the system didn’t work the way it was supposed to… and a family has to deal with their son not being at home tonight. It’s been a long day…
I can't imagine being in your shoes right now, Alan. I heard and discussed the shooting yesterday with friends. Who would ever imagine that it would have been a student of someone here. The whole ordeal is terrible from start to finish. At many levels this never needed occur. There is much to be angry about, and even more to be saddened over. My prayers are with you, your school and the family and friends of those involved.
