These beyond parallel limb bows have a Louisville Slugger for a riser, weight is way too much to pack around. Carbon is one way to reduce the weight and improve vibration dampening, but some of the injection molded thermoplastics are even better, the new stuff can even be powder coated.
Another area that could use some innovation is the limb materials. Limbs have been made out of thermoset glass composites for decades. Now Gordon Ind. has a new line of TechStrand thermoplastics, tough enough to use as armor in Humvees, but lighter weight than regular composites. AeroStrand is now being made in a new plant near Denver, lighter weight, tougher, continuous fiber instead random oriented fibers in a resin matrix. I think there might be some advantages ... lower Virtual Mass, better vibration dampening, higher elastic modulus, quicker time to recover from deflection ... might pick up some speed and help get weight down.
