I've had 2 English pointers and currently have a 1 year old Llewellin Setter. The pointers hunted hard. The first one I had was raised in the thick grouse woods here where I hunt and he had adapted to hunting close and was a gem! He was 2 or 3 when I got him and I had him for 8 before he had what was apparently a heart attack on me at the end of a great day of hunting, and just moments after a classic point and hold, and kill. My 2nd pointer, great lil dog, but rangy as I'll get out for a grouse dog. She was 4, fine the evening before, and dead in her kennel the next morning when I went out to work. She always came out of her box and I loved her for a minute or two EVERY day before leaving for work. I knew something wasn't right when I went out and she didn't greet me. Now, Leu, the Llewellin, man I believe he's gonna be sharp. He's out of the King Llewellin stock, and much the opposite of the pointers, he's a great family dog. He's got a super personality, and actually stays in the house with us. Don't know how well that will go during his first upcoming hunting season when I drag him in after a long day in the mountains and he's dirty....the way a hunting dog should be....LOL! My wife keeps him bathed and babied right now. I'm really looking forward to getting him out, he's hunted our yard and the surrounding woods to death this summer. So much fun to work with and watch.
