Opening Day in New Yorks Southern Zone gun season was Saturday 11-16.. I have a lease in an area that allows rifles, so I packed up my 30-06 and planned an all day sit. I saw 9 different deer by 10 am.. I didn't see anything again until 2pm.. I had a buck tag and a Doe permit for that area and I decided if another good doe came by I would fill my permit. I had yet to see a buck on a doe this entire season. At 2 o'clock I hear a deer trotting toward me, I grab the gun, a doe popps out of the scrub apples. I grunted her to stop and took the shot. I hit her solid taking out the heart. she ran 40 yards and dropped in sight. 20 seconds later I hear a another deer and some grunting.. Sure enough it's a buck and he was on her trail.. I tried to stop him but he wanted nothing to do with that. He ended up finding the doe and he wouldn't leave her alone, even though she was dead.. He hung around her for about 20 minutes never offering me a shot. (There were some small scrub apple tree tops in between us). He finally deceided she wasn't going to give him what he wanted and started to leave. When he did, he walked into an opening about 40 yards away. I grunted, he stopped, I shot, he dropped.. Holy crap now I have 2 deer to get out of the wood. One of the guys in my lease had a 4 wheeler so all I had to do was to get the deer to a trail. After an hour of dragging that task was complete.. It was 4 o'clock by the time I got the deer to the trail and pulled my tree stand so I waited for dark before I headed to the truck.. I didn't want to mess up anyone else's hunt walking out of the woods.
He's a 5 pt. He has one broken tine (G3) and no brow tine on his left side and a 3/4" brow tine on his right.. He's still a beautiful 2-1/2 year old.. Field dressed 140 lbs on my scale.. I only have one permit left, but it's for my brothers property and we aren't taking does there, so basically my season is over... Be safe. Jerry
