Been there done that Mark....
Usually a nice little camp shovel for a quick hole in the ground in a spot close to but outside the blind works great. Along with a tree/small hill, when someone else is in the blind solves the problem. But those flat land eastern Oregon Antelope/Deer hunts when I am staking out a water hole or trail = no trees and not much for hills. So, your explained method is my option 2.....for number 2.....
