Brian raises a very good point. Have we forgotten so quickly the fact that terrorists or individual psychopaths are out there bent on the slaughter of innocents? And no, as Brian states, we do not need a police state to provide "common sense" security. No right-minded person in the free democracies of the world wants a police state, but what we should expect is that those paid to provide security carry out their duties in a conscientious, dedicated manner. This is not to blame any one individual security officer but rather to ask that our various security agencies operate in harmony so that threats can be minimized, if not eliminated. I do not pretend to know the facts of this tragic event, but I do know that in Canada, the U.S., and elsewhere there is still too much turf protection among our various security and intelligence organizations. Again, my deepest sympathies and prayers for those killed and maimed and their families and friends.
