Since you say you want to dual purpose, Im going to assume you'll get a hunting style rifle.....Unless you're planning on heading after the big bears; the 7mm-08 is the way to go. I've been looking HARD at a new rifle as a graduation present for myself; I wanted: good long range performance, accuracy, readily available ammo and/or reloading components and all these things in a pretty rifle. Started looking at the 270, then compared it ballistically to the 7mm-08. If both are shooting a mid weight Rem Accutip factory load theres about 6 inches in elevation drop at 500 yards and less than 100 ft/lbs in energy; plus it eats up less powder and kicks less (I compared it the the 308 too and as I recall it beats it). As far as accuracy goes, when Nosler has a question of accuracy in their 7mm diameter line they go to the 7mm-08 becuase they have so much confidence in the accuracy of the cartridge. Id stay away from the magnums, get a mil-dot scope and learn to use if you're worried about elevation drop. You'll shoot a lot more without the noise and recoil.
