They are professionals. The fact is teams want to be winners. Winners have the best players. There are literally MILLIONS of individuals who would LOVE to play professional sports yet less than 1% of those individuals have the talent, determination to do such. They are no different than top CEOS for a company (many would love the position but simply aren't qualified to do so). Simple supply and demand raises their values. My answer is obvious- especially in NFL I don't know if they are making enough in some instances. Professional sports tear you down physically and many individuals do not enjoy a "quality of life" physically that many Americans can have after their retirement (though they retire at a much later age). Risk for permanent physical impairment in my opinion also allows their wages to be higher (and I know the same can be true for other professions- but most of those professions have a much larger qualified pool to choose from).
