The only thing that makes a mess when I smoke is when I smoke salmon or hams, but I line the bottom with tin foil and then I just toss it when I am done. When smoking sausages and running the smoker at 180 degrees or so, dripping is not a problem. If it is, the temp is too high or you are smoking way too long, in my opinion. There is no reason to run a smoker over 200 degrees.
