Spring Turkey Hunt 2012
This is my third year hunting at Circle B ranch. It is set up for gun hunting, but I was determined and this year on my first hunt with my new Jewel, I also successfully brought down my first Tom. That afternoon, I buried the front, top and sides of my blind in wild yellow flowers because the black buck and axis were avoiding my blind. We set up a jake and hen decoy approximately 17 yards away. I was about call in so I could go eat lunch when I heard gobbling off to my right. So I called back and three nice Tom’s made a beeline toward the jake decoy and then fluffed up. My heart was just pounding because I had never been able to draw them in this close before. Two of the toms grazed at about 25 yards and one started grazing between the two decoys at 17 yards, so I drew back, took my time to aim and slammed him right above the drumstick. His spurs were approximately 3/4″ and his beard is 9 1/2″. I was also informed that I am the first person to shoot a turkey on that ranch with a bow.
