Rut Buck

January 5, 2005 by Todd Wall

It was November 12th and the Illinois rut was in full swing. I was going to hunt in my climber that morning near some fresh sign found a couple days earlier, but elected to hunt one of my hang on stands that I had some confidence in. Well I wasnt seeing much, and it was a cold morning, so I stood for awhile in the stand with my Legacy hanging in the tree next to me. Lets just say Im really happy that I decided to not hunt in my climber in a different location and hunt this stand that cold Novemeber morning. Have you ever been surprised by a deer coming from behind your stand? I was! Right as I turned around to look behind me this monster was looking right at me up in the stand. Not only was I startled, this deer was staring me in the face. He didnt bolt, but he started to stomp off knowing something was wrong. As he turned his back to walk down my pre-cut trail, I grabbed my Legacy and in one motion drew, knelt down on one knee in the stand (there were branches in the way of the vitals), settled on the pin, and let my arrow fly. It was a perfect 25 yard heart shot. I could hardly wait to get down and start the tracking process. I found him about 70 yards away. Thank you Mathews for making this all possible. My Legacy is hands down the best bow Ive ever shot.
