Public Land Ghost

I had been transferred to Fort Drum in August and instantly threw up some game cams. First few days I had pictures of this buck and decided that this is the area I would hunt. After multiple deployments and missed seasons, I spend every off duty hour that I can in the stand and the majority of the time my wife is right there with me. We had not seen anymore sign or had any new pics of this buck and I was beginning to think that since I had set up my stand right before season that I may have pushed him out of the area. The particular morning that I took this buck, my wife and I woke up to 18-20mph winds so after a long discussion I headed out without my wife to just get some stand time in. It was miserable out and after a hour of nothing, I was contemplating joining my wife back in the warm house. All of a sudden out of nowhere this buck came through the brush and you could see that the rut had him chasing does. I was able to stand up and get drawn. When I finally was able to get him to stop, his vitals where in a 6in by 6in clearing. With my past bow setup I never would have taken the shot but my Helim shoots like a dream and ruins arrows (by hitting each other) every time I shoot our 3d target. I knew the arrow would go where I wanted so I squeezed my release. The arrow found its mark. The buck ran around 15 yards and that was all he wrote. Man you should have seen the mad look on my wife’s face when I had her come look at him. I bet she never stays home again! We will never shoot anything other than Mathews!
