New Zealand Red Stag Hunt

February 18, 2013 by Ron Aylestock

My wife and I went to New Zealand to visit our daughter and her family who had moved there a few months ago. And since a Red Stag hunt in New Zealand was one of those “bucket list” hunts that I had dreamed about, I just had to take advantage of the opportunity. So I booked a hunt with Alpine Hunting for the first week of the season. By the way, mid February in New Zealand was hot and sunny with temperatures running in the low 80′s. We did a lot of scouting and tried a couple of spot and stalks, which were new to me. I’ve only been a bow hunter for about 4 years and most of that has been out of tree stands. They really got the heart pumping and on the first one we got within 25 yds. before the stag spooked and ran. Tried an evening in a blind with no luck. But we spotted a nice stag late one day and decided to come back the next morning and give it a go. We sat up in a little dugout on the side of a hill just about daylight. It didn’t take long for that stag to show up. Took awhile for him to come in close enough for a shot, but when he did the Z7 Extreme did the job. What an exciting “once in a lifetime” hunt! It SCI scored 357 & 7/8s.
