My first Elk!

September 4, 2005 by Sherman Plunkett

I have always dreamed of hunting the graceful and mighty elk. So my dad and I packed up the truck and took off from the bootheel of MO and drove 24 hours until we reached the Uncompahgre National Forest in Colorado. We made camp about 15 miles into the Forest and began living one of our many hunting dreams. Hunting the wild elk of Colorado!

I harvested this cow elk on my second day of hunting during the 2005 elk season with my Mathews Outback.

I spotted the elk about 50 yards away and jumped behind a small spruce. I peaked around the tree and seen she was headed right for me. I positioned my self on one knee so that I could draw and shoot from that position.

The elk walked straight to the spruce and then veered to the right at the last second. When her head cleared the limbs, approximately 2 yards from me, she must have winded me. Because she swung around and ran. I stayed drawn and took two steps back from around the tree.

The cow stopped about 40 yards out quartering away from me and looked around. I let the arrow fly. As she ran off I could see my knock on her side. I immediately sit down and gathered myself. This was only my second elk hunt ever so I was rather jittery to say the least. After a few minutes I walked over to where the elk had been standing. The blood trail was there so I sit down again not wanting to rush the animal. After an hour I got up and began tracking the cow. About 100 yards later I found her.

I know this isnt the trophy that a lot of these Mathews customers have harvested but to me it is indeed the hunt of a lifetime.

I wanted to thank the Mathews co. for helping make my hunt a success. My dad and I are going again for the 2006 season and my Outback will be right there with me!
