Me and my Mathews

February 4, 2014 by Darrel Hurley

On September 5th 2013 my dream came true. I’ve hunted Elk for 41 years. All of it DIY, public land on foot with a back pack. My 4 sons and I have taken some nice elk but just couldn’t get over that 320 mark. As you can see with the help of my Mathews I got it done. I fell coming out in the dark on the 3rd and twisted my ankle. I had to take the next day off. I returned on the 5th all by myself and went right to my wallow. I got there just before dark and not knowing it at the time, I walked right into a big heard of elk. The cows started things off talking all over the place. Then he bugled twice and walked out of the trees. He walked right thru the only lane I had to shoot down. I cow called but their were so many cows talking he didn’t even hear me. He went right over to a small pine tree and shredded it for 10 minutes until there was nothing left. I started shaking like it was my first time. I kept telling myself that I had to get it together but I couldn’t. Right then he turned and followed 3 cows right back thru the lane. This time I let out what was supposed to be a spike bark. It sounded nothing like an elk at all, but it stopped him right in the lane. My 30 pin was moving quite little but with all the practice I knew I wasn’t going to miss at this range. I had to leave him over night as it got dark. My son came up at day light and it didn’t take long to find him. About 100 yds from where I hit him. There was no ground shrinkage this time. I don’t know if this will be my last one, but if it is I’m as happy as I can be. Me and my Mathews got it done. :)
