Shoot Type: Turkey
I have hunted spring turkeys for several years but have never tried it with a bow. This year I decided to limit myself to my Mathews Switchback XT and I was not disappointed.
It was a calm spring Kansas evening, a rarity, as I slipped into the edge of the field. I set up between two big cedar trees and ranged a couple landmarks to mark mental distances. Then I called and immediately received a gobble but saw nothing. I called again and within 30 seconds a big tom ran into the clearing just 25 yards in front of me.
Fanning out he began looking for his hen and ended up starring straight at me. I thought the gig was up and my heart pounded hard but to my surprise he didn’t run off. It seemed like forever but after about 3 minutes he began to slowly turn away from me. With his fully displayed tail feathers acting as a perfect shield I had a chance to set the call down and draw back. As he continued his counter clockwise turn I squeezed the release and saw the arrow reach its mark. He ended up just feet from where his dance had begun.
Thanks Mathews for making memories that will last a lifetime.
