Hunting with my son
I took my 12 year old son Luke hunting with me on November 4th, 2011 for an evening hunt. I had traded in my Switchback XT for a new Z7 Extreme. I was very excited to try it out in the field. It would turn out to be one of the most memorable days of both of our hunting lives! We spotted our buck following a doe in the corner of the cut corn we were hunting. I told Luke to get his bow and get ready. We had discussed before the hunt that if anything came in 20 yards or less he would take it, farther than 20 yards he needs more practice. The way the deer was angling across the field was going to make this a long shot and Luke was telling me to get my bow and take the deer. I asked him several times if he was sure he didn’t want this opportunity and he assured me that he wanted me to close the deal. As we watched this giant work his way toward us the anticipation grew for us both. The deer finally was within range and he made the fatal mistake of offering a broadside shot at 32 yards. I let it fly and we both were so excited to see it land right in the kitchen! The deer jumped and ran about 40 yards then stopped and looked back our way. As we watched him waiver then fall to the ground our elation grew. My son looked at me and said this was the greatest experience he had ever had! I would have to agree, being with my son and having the opportunity to harvest such a great deer with him next to me was incredible! Hopefully, the next time it will be his chance to get it done. The buck scored 155 6/8!
