Dads Spirit By my side

January 7, 2004 by Gary R. Salerno

This story is a cullmination of a life time of hunting with my father (John Salerno Jr.) hunting partner and best friend. I lost dad to cancer Nov, 29 2002. Prior to that event I had never missed a hunting season with my father in my 39 years. We had only bow hunted the last 8 years but always looked toward the bow season with a pasion. Dad loved his Mathews MQ32 and was excited about possibly taking a bear During the 2002 Maine season before his life was cut short at 62 years. It was tough to head out into the forrest this season without him right by my side but I new he would be heart broken if I didn"t go. I took dads bow and headed for Maine in October, never dreaming about the season that was about to unfold. Four days aftering arriving in Maine I took a beautiful black bear with Dads MQ-32. Dads friend Merril helped reteive the bruin, I became very sad that dad wasnt there. Merril said your dad is looking over your shoulder right now. Those words were never truer, as I was about to find out as the deer season got under way in upstate NY. One week into the New York bow season I downed a young buck with one shot from dads MQ-32. I said a prayer to the buck Knowing all the while Dads spirit was by my side. As November approached I headed to Westchester county in search of a mature buck and after several days of pushing my self out the door, and I beleive some prodding from dad, I took fine 8 pointer just before Thanksgiving. Call it what you will, call me crazy if you like, but there is no question in my mind that dad was right there all the time. Thanks for taking the time to read my story. All photos will follow. Yours Truly, Gary R. Salerno
