Cape Buffalo

November 21, 2011 by Harry Molligan

The hunt was a great success. I took a large (for me) Cape Buffalo with a bow. He was 39 ½ inches. As mentioned before, I used an 80# Mathews Monster with a Grizzly Stik Safari and an Ashby broadhead. The buffalo was quartering away more than I realized (he was turning as I released). The arrow broke rib, took about 3 inches of liver, took the right lung, crossed the midline and completely traversed the left lung. The arrow then chipped the rib on the far side. The buffalo ran about 15 yards and coughing up a considerable amount of blood. He fell twice and rolled onto his left side. He got up and ran another 20 yards with an enormous amount of blood coming from his mouth. He then rolled onto his right side breaking off the 6 inches of protruding arrow. He never got up.
