California Tule Elk

August 13, 2005 by Ed Fanchin

I was one of only a handful of lucky hunters that drew a coveted Tule elk tag in California in 2005. Tule elk are a unique species of elk that only reside in the Golden State. The Boone and Crockett Club recently recognized the Tule Elk as a separate species. I was fortunate to put together several scouting trips that contributed to my opening morning success. I shot the big 7×7 through both lungs at 30 yards. The bull never knew what hit him and only traveled 8 yards before falling over. I was using my trusty old Q2XL. He will score in the low 300s, making the B&C all time record book.
