Almost Got Away
The day before I bagged this buck I was hunting in my tree stand with my girlfriend. He came about 30 yards away and I waited until his head was behind a tree so I could draw my bow back. When I got my bow back and was waiting for him to take a step or two past the tree so I could let the arrow fly, he paused and didn’t move. The buck stayed behind the tree for 3 minutes and I could no longer hold the arrow back. I slowly let my string down but the doe behind the buck saw me as I was doing this. The doe trotted off and the buck followed. I was sick to see him run off when I had him so close.
The next morning I set off to see if he would return to this area. As the crack of dawn peeked over the tree-tops and turkeys on the next ridge over began to gobble, I heard leaves rustling behind my stand. When I turned to get a look of what it was, I saw a small 2×2 and not far behind I saw the buck from the previous night. The two walked down a hill and got about 20 yards away before I drew back and bagged this beautiful whitetail deer.
