6-Year Bull Elk
I began my quest for an elk in 2008. I met some guys who were do-it-yourself type hunters on public land and this type of hunting appealed to me. I basically invited myself to hunt with them and they were looking for someone to help share the cost of transportation to drive from VA to CO and so began my quest. Each year for the past 6 years I would train all summer in anticipation for the September elk hunt and each year I would return with no elk but with lots of memories of the time spent in the wilderness. If I did not enjoy the time spent with friends, the time enjoying God’s beautiful creation, the time reading my Bible, the challenge of trying to get an elk within bow range on public land and listening and watching these beautiful animals, I would have given up long ago.
Over the past 5 years I have many close calls and even two misses but each year was a new year with anticipation and excitement for the hunt.
On September 22 of this year my hunting partner and I were chasing elk and finally got the opportunity I’d been looking for. A bull offered a shot at a mere 13 yards and although the shot placement was less than ideal, it was a lethal shot and my bull only went about 250 yards. I thank God for my health, the resources to go on this hunt and the privilege of harvesting such a beautiful animal. I thank my wife for allowing me to spend time away in the wilderness, my hunting partner, Dan, for being there with me the day I harvested my animal and sharing that moment with me, and my friend, Mike, who let me tag along on that first elk hunt 6 years ago.
