i love my tacoma.¬† but it’s Achilles heel is it’s size.¬† big hunting trips, i fill it to the gills with the junk of two hunters.
it gets decent mileage.  it is an awful tow vehicle.  some folks do tow alot with it.  i dont like it.
looks like we are finally gonna get a half ton diesel truck!!  maybe the competition will come up with one as well.  looks like a nice option for me.
Location: Quantum LeapvilleI haven’t towed anything yet with my new Tacoma……..but what’s the problem you have with it vash? You are now reading my signature.
Joined: 11/27/2008Dodge has a half ton diesel coming out in the 2014 line-up!8 cylinder 5.0 cummins….it aint no 5.9L or 6.7L but lets be honestly lil half ton truck don’t need that much power hahha. But I believe I seen the specs for that truck and it said like 300HP I believe. Plenty for pulling I didn’t see any torque numbers though but im sure it will be enough. I just wanna see what kinda problems it causes.
Its a great motor though thats for sure.
hahah I’d hate to be a mechanic to work on that when one day something breaks…..motor will take up that holleeeeeeee engine bay area. Drop a wrench in that see if you can stick your hand in and get it out lol.jeeper.¬† the biggest thing i have towed was my brother’s Fleetwood E3 pop up camper.¬† just a tad lighter than 3k, if i had to guess.¬† that thing felt so heavy back there.¬† i hated it.¬† 3k is will within the trucks listed tow capacity (6500lbs), but i was..no it, felt gigantic back there.¬† i didnt tow long enough to see mpg..but folks get 10 towing.¬†¬† my brother tows it with a duramax..so it was not rigged with any weight distributing hitch stuff.
i just think towing is one of those things where “overkill” is not a bad thing.

It will be interesting to see the responses from the cumminGs guys when this truck hits the market.
Location: Kentuckyit will be interesting to see if it really happens.with that much torque and power I can see frames twisting..I am hoping when I buy my next truck that these diesel trucks get better MPG without adding ten thousand dollars (like now) to the MSRP. My Silverado (gas) mpg on the highway¬†is not bad but my wife’s new Ford Fusion gets 31mpg on the highway and I think she is getting over 20mpg in town……. Sure it’s a car vs a truck but when I tow with the truck¬†it’s just a pop up, so not heavy and on out of state hunting trips our gear takes up enough space to justify a truck but no real weight. Better mpg’s should be a benefit from a small turbo diesel in a pick-up (I hope). I live in northern IL so we constantly have higher gas prices. I use my truck as my daily driver and commute to work 68 miles round trip so better mpg’s is a big concern to me.
Joined: 4/18/2006Even with a diesel motor it will still only be a 1/2 ton pickup (suspension and tow ratings). If you are going to be towing get at least a 3/4 ton !!¬†Or better yet a 1 ton. A 1/2 ton is ok for around the neighborhood or for the soccer mom after school¬†but if your going to be going anywhere a 3/4 or 1 ton is the right tool for the job. I have a F350 crew cab 4x4¬†with a 7.3 diesel¬†and tow a 32′ camper full of gear and a Honda Foreman in the truck bed, 3 or 4 people in the cab and head across country with no worry’s about the truck…..right tool.

Idk if i agree with that, yeah if your going to pull horses cross country, But i would assume if there putting a diesel in a half ton, that the springs, shocks, and leafs are stronger then a normal half ton. I wouldn’t be afraid to try and pull 5,000lbs across the state on a hunting trip with that truck, I mean my familys 01 ram with a 318 with a tow packages and 4.10 gears pulls are 5500 pound boat 300 miles north to the hills of northern michigan an it does suck the gas at 8mpg but she goes lol.
