A few months back I scouted an area that was really remote to where normal hunters wouldn’t be and I truly believed no other hunters would get into my area. I decided to place a trailcam on a game trail and see what I got after a week. A week passed and I brought BOW4UM back with me to the location to help me pick out a tree and just basically show of my secluded spot (wasn’t worried about James going back there, he’s too old to walk that far ). He thought it was decent, nothing special, but I had a few does on cam and we jumped a few. So we fixed the location of my camera and jumped a few does. Fast forward a week, James came back with me to the spot, this time to find a tree to hang my stand and switch out the cards.
Well here is the pic from that card.
With those big bucks on camera, James gave me some props on my location and stand placement but was convinced there were better spots to find these bucks. So our third time out there, we took the card again (no bucks but tons of does this time) and hung my stand. After getting done with that we scouted out another area farther down the ridge that James took aerials of and though it could hold a few people to possibly setup and hunt. I set out another camera and after two weeks of being out there, we had “my” buck (and many other nice ones, a 135”+ 10pt for example).
Here is a pic from the second camera location.
A member of this forum, Doug, his son and I decided to go out and hunt this ridgeline. I wasn’t going to hunt my lock on for a bit because I figured I was going to shoot a doe this day. So I went out and sat 20 yards from the second camera location on a tree James and I picked out on a great pinch and Kenny went about 100yard down and sat the ridge on the other side of the creek in a tree James picked out. My phone battery was dying because I have to curb my adhd somehow and leave it to me to forget to change out the AAA batteries on my two-ways….so I basically have 10% battery left in my phone and its 3hrs or so til sundown.
I hear some crunching behind me and looked back to a decent sized doe. I slowly got up, grabbed my bow and this doe was going to walk right under my stand. As I’m watching her, white catches my eyes behind some bushes on this flat. So I continue to watch this flat and the first glimpse of what actually it was is when the buck steps out into my shooting window. The window is about 8ft long and 20yards away. I almost crapped my pants when I saw this buck, saw the kickers off the back and new it was the BIGUN I was after! I couldn’t get drawn on him and a shot off in the first window, so I was praying he’d take the turn and head up the flat towards Kenny and my second shooting lane.
So the doe continues on her way under me and get on the trail and the buck takes his turn and goes right!!! I draw back and when he steps into my shooting window I give a soft bleet, he stops, and I let him have the shwacker! Blew threw his right shoulder blade and out the left shoulder blade!!!! BIGUN didn’t even know what hit him! He stumbled off 25yards or so and I hear him crash, must have got up and crashed again.
Now James is not hunting with us because he has a date with a special lady. I have 10% battery and can barely talk. I call James and tell him and that I need his help!! James is 2hrs away and about to have his date show up to head to dinner or whatever. He told me not to get down, wait in the tree, and he will be there. I couldn’t confirm the buck was dead so it was best in his eyes for me to stay put. So my phone dies and all I heard from James was “hold on, don’t get down and I’ll come to you”. I have no phone, no two-way to talk to Kenny and no idea where my buck is because I heard him but couldn’t see him through the thick stuff. This isn’t’ easy for someone like me and too add i’m starting to get FREEZING with mesh camo because i haven’t washed my other stuff yet DOH! (annnnd i’m hunting Saturday morning, still haven’t washed my warm camo……)
Sure as heck 2.5-3hrs later I see James walking to me!! He spots my buck dead to rights as he is walking my way and comes and says “Wendell, It’s a beauty buck but not BIGUN, sorry bro”…..i almost cried right there. Then he said he was messing and to get down to grab this sucker.
James had his DATE WITH HIM!!!! hahaha who would do that for a buddy?!?!?! She is wicked cool for not hating me or James. I owe them a steak dinner for sure. James cancelled his date, brought her with him and was able to be a part of this buck through the whole adventure! He was there when I got the first camera pic, the second camera pic, scouting stand locations and finally went waaaaaaaay out of his way to be there for the kill. Can’t thank him enough, not many people have friends that would do this with/for them. So thank you.
This is my first trophy buck (James put me on my first buck last year might I add) and I’m blessed to have two buddies, Kenny and James, there to celebrate with me! James even gutted the buck for me since he loves touching deer manjunk hahahaha we got the deer out and took it to one of James buddies to cape him out and get him in the freezer. There is a ton of stuff I could write, and I’m sure I’ll follow up with some more details, but that is the basics and the important stuff.
Here he is!
Just gonna add that this made me forget about falling out of the tree last week
