Well, I got in a lease this year in Union County, Illinois. Hunted the first week of November. Didn’t fill my tag, but came very close and saw some really nice deer.
I have 5 or 6 days off in mid December to hunt. I could either stay home and hunt my lease in Mississippi (pre-rut) or go to Illinois (post rut). I have never hunted after the rut in Illinois, so I don’t know if it will be worth the drive(7-1/2 hrs).
    What would you do?

After gun season here, it gets pretty tough. Unless you have a good quiet food source that the deer are using.

    Stay home and watch TV!

NOT!!! Cant kill the big ones if you dont hunt where they are – go to iL. Wish my lease was only 7.5 away!!! You will also learn for future hunts.

My Buck killing skills are sick – too bad there not contagious!!!

Union is just a couple counties over from where hunt in the Shawnee, actually a lot of shawnee in Union also. We take a late season hunting trip EVERY year whether we have a buck tag or not….this year all 3 of us dont have a buck tag…. :D :D :D which means our November trip was excellent. But, we will go on our late season trip to shoot a doe or two and scout. We have learned more in our late season trips than anything else we’ve done scouting wise. And, as someone stated, if you have or can find a food source, the hunting can be great if you get the weather! We’ve killed late season bucks out there, and just simply see a ton of deer….if the weather is right! Our drive is also 7.5-8 hours. We have driven it for a long weekend, if you have a week, I say hit the road jack! If you are flexible on timing, watch the forecast and try to hit some cold weather, usually later in December. For several years now we have went immediately after Christmas and have been there for New Years. That is assuming you are going to bow hunt. Of course if you are thinking about going for the late shotgun, your dates aren’t flexible.

If I remember correctly, we hunt the same county down here. Last few years I’ve seen the most rut activity during the last week of dec. and first week of jan. You can go up there an still be back down here for the best action :thumbup :thumbup

With the way the bucks are still chasing right now, I’d be back up here.

I would be able to hunt 12/7-12/12. I’m thinking real hard about going back. How much hunters orange is required?

The 7th, 8th and 9th are muzzle loader season. You have to wear a solid orange vest and hat minimum.
