I’ve been very fortunate. To date I’ve never lost a deer with the bow. I’ve made my share of poor shots, but always been able to recover the animal.

That goes for me as well. But my shooting has improved enormously and I only take broadside or quartering away shots. I’m also a relentless tracker. Still, it can happen to anyone  .

I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and require the same from them. John Wayne - as J.B. Books

I have lost two and one was this year. Shot was good, deer did not cooperate. She went on to another parcel of land and I do not have permission to go there.
Other was a buck 10 years ago that I hit high in the back. Missed the yardage and shot high. Buck was fine. 2% or less for me. Breaks my heart when it happens.

On the other hand, I know a family that hunts a nice piece of property and they lose at least 5 deer a year due to poor shots. Most of them are archery shots as well. It is a shame!

I just found a 6 point yesterday that I shot with a shotgun in November. Not much left. Vertebrae and skull/antlers surrounded by hair and coyote poop with hair in it. Oh well, at least I have the antlers. Would have liked to have found it though. Coyotes gotta eat too.

    just one two years ago.
Hit her a little far back, tracked her to neighboring property at dark, went for her the next morning never did find her, and the property owner would not let me in to see. Game warden wasn’t available to help, what can you do.

I have never lost a deer that I hit with an arrow, but then, I have also had a couple of clean misses. #-o Thank goodness! I’ve always been really, really picky about the type of shot I’ll take, and this has caused me to have to watch a few of them walk away. Oh well, I’d rather do that than take a chancy shot and risk a bad hit.
It's not how far you shoot, but how close you get.

That kind of stuff happens. Sorry it was on your first deer. But don’t despair because you will have a much better percentage as you encounter more deer and take more shots.

Hang in there and keep hunting!

Thankfully I have only artists one deer that was never recovered and it was because she crossed a creek onto another property even after a follow up shot with a pistol. I was really disturbed by it and it was the reason I stopped shooting the rage broadness.

Maybe you should change pistol bullets also 8-| If the deer went through all that I have a feeling the rage took the blame for another bad shot.[/quote:1inyxf78]

I can tell you that if i have bad luck with a piece of equipment i will stop using it as well. Confidence is 75% of this game.

I lost one I hit, but it did not die

(Hit in the thick part of the shoulder, recovered entire arrow, lost all blood sign after 40 yards)[/quote:16kvzvk5]

Yep, it probably survived just fine. Just sore for a week or so.

Yea, I’ve seen that deer or its twin several times. It looked like it had a radio antenna on its left side as it ran away. 1 inch further back and I would have had more venison in my freezer. Oh well…

I still have the Montek I recovered. If I ever have to use more than 8 arrows, it is on #9. (Pecking order = 3 long Muzzie Phantoms, 3 short Muzzie Phantoms, and 3 Montecs.)

I try to keep the odds in my favor by taking high percentage shots and I consider myself fortunate so far with not having lost one yet. [=}=]

I take precisely the same approach. But your score is better than mine.

Two years ago I shot a spike (culling that genetically-inferior dude) with a perfect double-lung shot. He took off like a rifle shot. I tracked him for a half mile or so, and then lost blood. We had four of us tracking, and still couldn’t find enough blood to make a trail. Even the dog couldn’t find the trail. We gave up after circling for another hour trying to find something.[/i:l2qiua1n]

The Hunting Manager found him two days later not far from a watering hole about another mile away. He was marked with a few buzzards. Too late to keep the meat… but at least he won’t be breeding any more does.

    Jay[/quote:l2qiua1n]

    Jay,

I have to disagree with you on shooting “cull” bucks. How do you know that the spike wasn’t a late birth in the year? It’s been proven that spike bucks can develop into very impressive racks in their lifetime. How do you know you didn’t shoot a future P&Y? I am just curious on your reasoning!

    Thanks,

    Zach
