Good job Rabbit.  Way to go on your buck.

I have been having a tough hunt here in Wisconsin.  Nothing to show for two visits.  I am being a little selective on my hunting but this last week has been a little tough with all the rain – 20-30 mph winds and more rain.  Shot a large 8 on Saturday but never did find him.  Hit him in the shoulder and surprising the arrow only penetrated 5 inches, found the arrow with it broke off.  Blood an additional 4 inches of the arrow but 5 inches were in the deer.  I truly thought the deer was done but not so.  Waited for 4 hours and looked for him.  I was certain that I had him but it turned out that the blood trail was not good.  We did find blood about every 20 to 30 feet but only spots.  It finally disappeared down in one of my valleys.  We walked thru both valleys but never did find him.  Darn.  I really thought the shot was good.  With my bow at 70 pounds and 31 inch draw I have 405 grain arrows traveling at 326 ft/sec.  I am surprised I did not have a complete pass thru.  Actually my elk that a shot two years ago was a complete pass thru.  I must have really hit something hard.  I do have one more hunt coming in two more weeks so we shall see.  But I am really going to have to get my act together as the pressure is really on now.

Well done Rabbit!  Looks like a real dandy.  I hope you  had some help getting him out of the woods.

Stick with it Schaub.  Third time is the charm.

Thanks for the words of encouragement Rabbit.  I was rather down for several days after the 8 pointer got away.  It would have been my biggest buck with a bow.  A real dandy.  I even passed on a nice 10 point the next day because of my experience with the 8 pointer and my thoughts that I would still find it.

Hopefully Jim is doing a little better.  He started his hunt up there 3 days after mine started so I am hoping he has more luck.  It did seem as though the rut was moving in full force on Saturday, Nov. 2nd when I shot the big 8 but with the weather changes I did not see anymore chasing until Sunday, Nov. 10th my last day in the woods.  Actually with my flight on Monday I was on pretend hunting on Sunday but it my most enjoyable day in the woods for the entire week.  They were alive again and I did witness a two bucks chasing a doe in the AM and another buck chasing a doe in the PM.  Neither was close enough to me but it was just fun being out there.

Can not wait to hear from Jim to see what he saw during the week.

My last hunt will be during the gun hunt and thankfully Wisconsin lets the bow hunters out during the gun season.  I am hoping for luck during that time.

Looks like our team is performing very well.  I’m not sure why led0321 does not have his 5 points yet as he shot 3 does so hopefully he gets his points in soon.

I did! My wife drove an hour to help me look for him for several hours. Then helped with getting him out of the creek and back to the truck. She was there about 3 hours or more then had to drive home alone.

Congrats Rabbit!  Well done.  Unfortunately, I have no good news to report.  I left my house on the morning of the 4th for a 4 hour drive up to my hunting land for 10 days of prime rut hunting.  2 hours down the road I got a call that my dad was seriously ill in northern Wisconsin.  My 4 hour drive turned into a 6 hour drive to my parents house.  I spent most of those 10 days with my dad.  I did go hunting for 3 days during the middle of the ordeal at my dads insistence as he was doing relatively well at the time.  I did not see a shooter buck during those 3 days.  I was going to shoot a doe and I did see plenty of deer but everything that came in range was a small buck.  I thought I had a doe for sure as it came in right under my stand, but it turned out to be a button buck.  On one of those 3 days, the neighbor shot the big heavy mass deer we knew was frequenting our land.  Amazingly the buck was all beat up and had broken off both of his G4′s.  I’d like to find the buck that did that to him.  My season is not over though.  I will still hunt some in Wisconsin and I also have a hunting trip in January to Mississippi.

The buck the neighbor got about 100 yards from our property border.

    Jim,

Sorry to hear about your father.  Hope he is doing much better.  Glad you were able to get out for some hunting.  I didn’t have any luck either with my hunt.  It was mostly due to bad weather.  Hoping for better weather next weekend.  I will be out in the woods again.  This time I will need to perform.  Hopefully I will see some does this time.  I, like you, was mostly seeing little bucks during my week.  Sunday I had quite a few deer around me but that was the day before I get on a plane for my trip back to AZ so I just go out for either nothing or a monster.  That would be the only thing that would make me change my plane ticket.

Hope you have another chance to hunt in Buffalo County.

Good luck Steve. I will be headed up to far northwestern Wisconsin on Sunday. I’ll be hunting some in Douglas county. Big timber country up there. I think I’ll bring my bow and rifle.  If it makes you feel any better – it’ll probably be colder where I’ll be. :)

    Jim,

I just bought a new cold weather outfit.  It is the new stuff from Under Armor.  I bought the jacket last time I was up and it worked great.  I now have the pants and the under garments for the top and bottom.  Can not wait to try them in the really cold weather.  It is really a light setup so I really like it.  I can still put on my really heavy stuff over it if I have to but usually I do not get that cold until it gets into the single digits.  Except my feet…..  They get cold always.

Yes.  I will have my bow and rifle.  I will start out with the rifle at my grandfathers farm.  I was wanting to hunt over there as the last hunt this year the weather was terrible so we did not get over there…. except to clear out the dug-a-way road on a rain day.  Hopefully I will have my buck tag filled with the gun on the first day.  Generally I do get luck when I go over there so I am hoping that it continues.  If I get my buck with the gun on the first day I will hunt the rest of the week with the bow.

Good luck to you on your hunt.  Sounds like to have may different places that you hunt.  Have a very good week.

Have you heard from led0321 lately? I saw that he shot several does several weeks ago but his points were never recorded?

Hey fellas, I am here, I have killed 4 does and a 7 point.  I will get the deer added by Vince soon.  As soon as my vacation stopped work has been busy.
