Thanks for sharing the additional pictures.  That buck is a real stud.  The web like rack is really cool.  I try to age deer but it is sometimes difficult to do.  Especially when they get older as 4-1/2 years and older.  This buck is definitely 4-1/2 + years old.  The big belly, the wrinkles in the neck hide, hanging neck line,  and all around additional pounds this guy is carrying around.  If I were to guess I would say 5-1/2 years old.  The one thing I cannot tell is how gray he is in these night pictures.  I would think a 5-1/2 year old would be more gray????  Anyway that is my guess.

    Nice Buck.

Thanks Steve.  I’m thinking you’re fairly accurate in your assessment.  Hopefully I get some better pictures of him…or better yet – get a look at him laying dead on the ground.  Will let you know either way.

I have looked on some of the other posts and it looks like a lot of people will be starting their hunting trips Oct. 1.  I think most of the people in our group will be starting a little later.  We should start to see team scores starting to add up.

I am planning on getting a doe as soon as I can but the buck I am going to be picky about.  It will have to be a real monster for me to tag one on my first hunt, Oct. 11-20.  I will also be up on Nov. 1 – 12.  that is the time I see my best bucks so I will hopefully be seeing more bucks at that time.  Generally that is when the bucks start to move and you can usually see many more bucks at that time.

Just cannot wait until I am heading North to the promise land.

Good luck hunting this weekend led0321. Looks like you might be our first whitetail hunter.
Gabe – when are you hunting?
    Rabbit – how about you?

Yes, I second that.  Good luck led0321.  I will be out in the woods in about 11 days.  Hoping for a little cool down.  I’ve been watching the weather and it appears that the temperature’s up in Buffalo County will be cooling next week.  Lows are going to be in the lower 40′s…… hoping for little cooler maybe upper 30′s?  Lets hope that the forecast does not increase the temperature.

I don’t have a place to hunt now, the government shutdown prevents me from hunting on base.

    I am crushed

Lets hope this is a short government shutdown.  This is the first one in 17 years and I do not believe they ever last more than a couple days to a week.   I’m sure you will be allowed to hunter real soon!

Wow. They won’t let you hunt? What base? I don’t think this shutdown will last long either.

Hopefully they open it back up for you soon. Starting to look like this budget stuff could last a few weeks though. I’ve hunted a few air force bases (I was active duty 14 years before going to the national guard) and it was pretty good hunting. Do you know why they closed hunting? Some kind of check station they can’t man during the govt shutdown?

I do not want to make this about politic’s but maybe the VA Governor should grow some balls and do what the Wisconsin Governor did and reopen all the parks and federal hunting land.  He has instructed all the parks to remain open and has told the Wisconsin residence’s they are still welcome to hunt on the federal land.  He has also tore down the barricades that were put up to close down the parks.  I wish my Governor in Arizona would do the same.

On another note it does seem this thing is going to drag on.  I think their plan now is to have some sort of grand bargain between the budget and the debt ceiling.  Hope they do figure it out soon.  They apparently have until the 17th of October to resolve the debt ceiling before we start to default on our bills.

    chieff15,

I have been trying to keep up with the weather in Wisconsin since I will be heading that way next Friday.  It does look like it will be a little warmer than I had hoped…….  But as we both know that can change quickly.  Still hoping for the low temp. to be mid to high 30′s.  Low 40′s max.

Steve – I just got back to Wisconsin myself. Its cooled off a little, but not as cool as you’d like yet. Hopefully it will though. I still don’t think I’ll get to bow hunt til the end of the month. I know some guys who have been hunting in buffalo county and things have been slow so far.

Generally the best time is the beginning of November.  I just had the opportunity to go up earlier this year also.  I would never miss the beginning of November.  I am going to be partially working on the farm and doing some hunting in this first trip.  I have to also get the trail camera pictures again as it has been about 2 months now since the last ones.  Last time  slightly more than 4000 pictures on one of the cameras.  I set the camera to reset for a picture every minute…. far too often as I got multiple pictures of the same deer.   I have to correct that.

    Just can not wait.
