Nice porker brother!!! And congrats on your first one!

Couple more weeks for me, right now limited to squirrels…LOL! Been taking Boomer out squirrel hunting, nothing any funner for a 9 year old than getting to blast at squirrels. He gets all tore up when one goes to shaking a limb in a hickory tree……and good thing he gets a lil tore up and misses a lot. I hate cleaning those darn things….LOL!

Its closing in. Youth day this coming Saturday and then bow opener the following Saturday. Looking forward to taking Boomer out Saturday morning. Got a couple good bucks showing up regularly on an oak flat where we’ve had lots of success in years past. Going to ease into that stand 30min before daylight Saturday morning and see what happens. I hope the big 10pt we have on cam shows up, hes showing up couple days per week, which tells me he’s probably there every day and just not walking by the cam every day. Hopefully something triggers him to stay on his feet just a few more minutes Saturday morning. He’s been traveling through the flat about 30min before daylight and then coming back through about 30min after dark. The 12pt my daughter killed last year was doing the exact same thing, and during the night prior to youth day last year, we had a front move through and he showed up 30min after daylight. Looking ahead, we are going to have a front passing through friday night/saturday morning…..got my fingers crossed!

Youth day was a blast, didn’t turn out exactly as I had hoped, but I enjoyed the day with Boomer, and my father enjoyed the day with Kacie my daughter. Boomer and I seen four 1.5 year old bucks and a nice lil 2.5 year old 8pt. Had the 8pt out in front of us at about 150 yards Saturday evening, and I wanted Boomer to shoot him. He elected not to, and instead decided to shoot a doe. I dont shoot young bucks, but he is only 9 and I encourage him to shoot what ever he wants. I’m still surprised he didn’t want to shoot him, but I want him to make these choices for himself. He knocked the old doe flat in the edge of the woods about 15min before dark. We gave her a few minutes while we collected ourselves and our things, got our lights out, and walked over to her just as it was good and dark. Unfortunately, and to my utter shock, she jumped up and around the hill she went. I was very puzzled, am still puzzled, but think maybe he hit her high and shocked, but didn’t break her spin. We backed out and went back Sunday morning. We tracked her with very little blood for roughly 300 yards, and finally lost her. I’m satisfied that she is ok…barring infection or something like that. Hated it for him, he was pretty disappointed as that was the first one hes lost. Its part of it, and a tough lesson to learn sometimes. I have it on video, and honestly thought he’d killed her stone dead.

Sorry guys…I’m slacking! Have passed on 3 opportunities at does. Passed a big ol doe on Saturday evening. My wife shot a big doe Saturday morning, and I just couldn’t stand the thoughts of working two deer up in one day. Yesterday it rained all day and my sons football practice was canceled, which I coach, and that freed me up to slip up a tree for a couple hours yesterday evening. They have a game tonight, and that was on my mind as I seen 8 deer. All does and little ones, but had 2 opportunities at mature does. Knowing that I we have the game tonight, and wondering when I will get time to work it up prevented me from shooting again. I really enjoyed the time though.

I gotta be honest with you, for the first time in 22 years I wasn’t excited about bow season opening. Not that I’ve lost the passion, but this year, I didn’t have time to get excited, and anticipate it like usual. I have a 12 year old and a 9 year old both actively involved in sports and I coach, its just been busy! I’ll eventually pull the trigger, all I do is bow hunt for the most part, will be done with football and softball by the end of the month, and I’ll do some whacking. In the mean time, yall gonna have to pick up the slack for me!!! Good luck and be safe.

I sent my info and pics to Vince so we can get our points. Go team, now the rest of you guys get out there and at least get your doe taken so we can get some points on the board. I also put a post on the bow hunting thread.
