I’ve been hunting hard over the last week and a half. I’ve done all day sits, everyday since last Thursday figuring that the rut action should be firing up any time now. And I was beginning to think that all our deer had hightailed it out of the county. Well, things finally changed this morning!
I’ve been seeing a BIG bodied deer walk through about 60 yards from my stand just before morning light for the last few days. Even with good glass, I still couldn’t see what kind of headgear he’s sporting. So I set up a new stand as close as I could to where he’s been coming through and I sat there this morning.
This morning was cold, damp and misty. (perfect big buck killing weather) I got out extra early to let things settle down and then, sure enough, 10 minutes before light a shadowy figure comes into view. I can’t see squat through my binos due to lens fogging so I still have no idea what this brute and his rack looks like. I come to full draw, I can just make out my single green fiber pin and I settle it just behind where the shoulder blade would be on the silhouetted buck and I let him walk by at 25yds. (it’s before shooting light and even though I know this is a deer, and a big one at that, I’m not going to take this risk.)
Like the last two mornings, I once more watch him walk out of my life. But 15 minutes later, just after daylight, all heck breaks loose! Theres snortin, wheezin and thrashing going on just 150yrds upwind from me. Suddenly I’m up to my ears in bucks. There are four 2 1/2 yr olds and a spike running in and out of the thickets in front of me and after a few seconds I realize why.
There is a hot doe in there and she is being guarded by Mr. Big himself! Every time one of them tries to muscle in on his action he chases them off. I finally get a good look at him and he is H U G E ! Looks to be a 12pt. Easily a 150 class, possibly over 160! And W. I. D. E!
Long story short, I stayed on stand until sunset (thats over 11 hrs) and saw them multiple times throughout the day. But they never came close enough for a shot. I could have arrowed five different bucks throughout the day that waltzed through my circle of death, but I now have my sights set on Mr. Big.
The wind is forecast to be in my favor again tomorrow, so rest assured I will be out well before first light
I hope to have pictures for you within the next few days!
Man, I LOVE this ****!!!!

I hunted Ohio last week and Sandy pretty much kicked my butt. Rained everyday but Thursday and had three shooters come in from the opposite direction I was looking and never knew they were there with the wet leaves until it was too late, and one that walked straight in presenting no shot. Spotted me at 10 yds and gone.I did get a doe on the worst day weather wise

Joined: 7/8/2006Well, I gave it my best shot to arrow Mr.Big. I even took a couple extra vacation days last week to try and close the deal. But I never did make contact with him again.
Gun season opened up around here today. My son-in-law took out one of the adult does that I had let walk several times during bow season. I don’t own the property so I have no say in how it’s managed, but we don’t have that many adult does to begin with due to many years of “Earn-a-Buck” regulations. Wish he’d have taken the yearling that was with her instead, but… what can you do.
On my way out of the woods tonight I came to a spot where the wood line meets the crop fields. It’s past dusk, but there is still plenty of light in the western sky. There, on top of a small knoll, in the middle of a small cornfield is the silhouetted profile of Mr. Big @ 60yrds! He’s still alive and he’s still B I G !!!! But once again, our paths cross when it’s past legal shooting light. He had caught my movement but wasn’t spooked. I froze in place and watched him through the binos for another 10 minutes until i knew it was dark enough to just walk directly away from him across the winter wheat.
I’d really like to take this guy with the bow. But if he shows up in the daylight with the smokepole in my hand…. Bang!!!
