Maybe you guys that hunt in So. Ill could give me a heads up on a good outfitter? Maybe in Pope county? I picked up a 500 acre farm close to Burna Ky. for next year but since its only a one Buck state would like to spend more hunt time on my 10 day vacation so I want to find and outfitter across the river less than 2 hrs away in So. Ill? Driving from south Florida is a long way to go for one Buck. Anyway, I think Pope county is about an hour NW. I did find Jarod Jacksons place, “Ohio Valley Trophy Hunts” but dont know anything about his place other than his website I found… Thanks for any good recs… :thumbup

Oh…I can only hunt the outfitter Nov 16th-20th 2013, my only window.

Don’t know if pike county is too far or not…Buck Creek Farms with David Mckay. I go to church with him and have helped hang stands and filmed some nice bucks for him. Great lodge and camp. Check his website out for more info.

Yeah…too far, but many thanks….trying to stay under 2 hrs from KY. After the ILL hunt I need to get home in one day to Ft. Lauderdale, so 16-18 hrs max as I am towing an RV as well.

Hunted Pittsfield for a little over a week and came home sunday night, the little bucks were still chasing pretty good. Hopefully your buddies do well. Alot of the big boys are still locked down from what I saw, hope they get back on their feet soon. [-o| :thumbup

Looking at your dates, I believe the 16th and 17th will fall during the 2013 shotgun season, in which no bow hunting is allowed. That is state law, not outfitter option.

As for Pope County outfitters, I only know 3. 2 are pretty cheap, and one is a high fence. I haven’t went with any of them, we hunt the Shawnee, but you can take a look at the following:

Round Pond Outfitters: They have some private ground and some leased land, in which a lot of it joins National Forest. Their main location, where lodging and camping are, joins a very large block of National Forest, and from what I’ve seen on the map is very difficult to access unless you are with them. They offer lots of options at varying prices. Anything from simply providing you with a camp spot and the property to hunt, to a full package of lodging, meals, and stands already in place for you to hunt.

Bear Creek Outfitters: They look to be one large private farm, and only allow hunting group at a time. They do not join any National Forest best I can tell.

Sampsons Ridge: High fenced guaranteed hunt.

If you have an RV, I’d look into some of the camp grounds and just hunt the shawnee……it aint bad huntin bro. Been there 8 years running and haven’t even thought about an outfitter.

Thanks for the info q….Based on the one outfitters website I found his dates for next year are listed for the 16th-20th, bow hunting? Would need to check the ill site to confirm but assume he knows the state laws? As far as the others I will look into them, except the high fence, not for me. And the Shawnee, problem there is learning where to hunt in 4 days of never being there? Just not worth the risk with my short time frame? Thats why I was looking for an outfitter to up my chances going all this way having never deer hunted the midwest before….Thanks again…E.

Try looking into Shawnee Hills Outfitters – Brit Williams (618)559-9588 cell. I have visited this outfitter and seen the facilities it is like staying in a 5 star ranch, you will not be disappointed. Located in Equality, Ill. just on the other side of the Ohio River from Kentucky. If you shoot a 190 or better your hunt is free and if you don’t kill a buck you can go back in December for half price.. everything is included the price meals n lodging. Good luck next year.

I used to be in a lease in Williamson Co and the guys (locals) there spoke highly of this place. We were just West of them in Crab Orchard. Even rode down there one afternoon to see what they were bringing in.

Thanks…look at his website, pretty poor? Trophy photos from 1993 & 1996? really? Click on the state lic. page….shows info for 2006? Really? He may not be a good internet/advertising guy and a great hunter/outfitter but in this day and age you must have the right marketing tools if this is your main business? I dont get a warm fuzzy feeling when I see very old photos and information. Somebody may want to contact him and suggest he update his site? Just my 2 cents but I do have 30 years marketing background so I thought I might make this suggestion to him…will keep looking….E.

I have been hunting with Britt at Shawnee Hills since 1998. I will speak to him about his website. There are some old photos that he leaves up there in the photo gallery to honor some friendships he has made, but the bulk of them are recent.

He has good ground, a very nice lodge and great meals. His family sure can cook…. He is as woods wise as anyone I have ever met. He knows the hill country of southern Illinois and his ground very very well.
I have personally seen many bucks from 150 up to the 195 killed while I was there.

It is fair chase and if your not use to the hills it can be physical walking, but you will be treated as one of the family and you will have a good time there. I would not steer away from him because of website issues. I understand your point from an advertising perspective but after all it is about the quality of the hunt.
