I am working with the local rec commission in our town on setting up a archery range. Am looking for imput on targets that are affordable and can be let out in weather. Was thinking compression targets with 2 x 6’s and all thread. What is best material to use in them.. Thanks Ken

Our club has 30 target range left out year round. Made out of 2X4’s for a frame, a plastic mess meterial and filled with old clothes, sleeping bags, any type of clothing or cloth like meterial. Every spring we repack each target but and it stops any arrow with 2 finger removal. CHeap and lasts along time.

As far as I know, there is no good layering material for an outdoor compression-type target. I’ve shot compression targets made of various things. All quickly shoot out in one spot and require frequent maintenance, are very abrasive and wear on the arrows, and the layered compression tends to bend XX75/XX78/ACC/ACE/X-10 shafts. Without protection from the elements they don’t hold up well…the all thread will rust.

Go with what MAACHER said, that is what my club uses also. :thumbup

Maarcher, what is the plastic mesh material and where do you get it? Our club is looking for the same thing.

my range uses stacked carpet pieces. they crunch it down and band it with metal straps. they last forever! the carpet is coated with a rubber waterproofing material. there is a piece of rubber that forms an awning for the face, so it gets some shielding from the rain. i’ve never seen one worn out.

So that plastic poultry mesh is on both sides? If so isn’t that hard on arrows and going to break up pretty quick?

Yep it’s on both sides. Nah its just thin plastic. Never replaced the plastic since it was made. This target has stopped 1,000’s and 1,000’s of arrows and still stop them just like it did the day I made it in 2009. I shoot hunting shafts, and target shafts into it. Anyone that shoots fat arrows know what they do to a target also. :thumbup

I doubled up on the mesh because I had plenty and I have had zero issues! Works awesome just as the day I put it out like Ricky's.

Great target and very economical!! :thumbup

Thanks Sticks! Less then $60 into it because I used scraps from other projects over the years. I plan to install vinyl siding on the back/sides and use deck stain on the doors.

Caswel80 what did you use to cover your field tip target? It looks like plastic tarp or something.
