So this year has been tough to get out in the woods since my wife and I had our first baby boy on September 18th, but I told her I would still like to get out a few times at least, to try to get one of my hit listers on the ground. She was very supportive of it and made arrangements to take care of the baby and be a great mom while I went out in the woods for a few hours. Well this past Saturday, our son had his 2 month dr visit and she asked me if I wanted to take this opportunity to get out in the woods since his visit was early in the morning. I did not decline the offer, as I had checked my camera pretty religiously over the last month, and saw one of the 3 bucks on my hit list, that we called “mr. tines” showing up on my camera, visiting a scrape frequently during daylight hours. So, with the front and severe weather supposed to be moving in on sunday, I figured just maybe he would be out cruising. I got set up in my stand around 5:45am and waited for daylight. At about 7:50, a lonely doe came walking across my path in on the trail that I have my stand off of, and the wind was just right for the stand. With no meat in the freezer and a doe tag in my pocket, I decided to let one fly and hit her good. She made it about 30 yards before piling up. I waited for a bit to get her and as I was just about to get out of my stand to get her dressed out, I caught movement on the trail directly upwind of me. I waited to see if it was another doe or a buck, particularly one of my hit listers. As it continued walking, I saw the tips of antler above the thick honeysuckle, so I decided to give the rattle a shot. I started on a hard minute long rattle sequence and noticed this buck started to change course and walk towards me.  I hung up the antlers and picked up my dxt and waited. He got into a semi clearing at about 35 yards and I got a good look at him, and sure enough, I recognized the set of antlers from the previous pictures on my camera. I knew he was on a string trying to find the fight, so I mentally prepared myself for the shot and kept telling myself, “pick a spot, aim, and make a good shot”. So I waited for it seemed like a half hour but was probably only about a minute, and he walked to within 15 yards in front of me. I drew back while he had his head behind a honeysuckle bush and waited for that next step. He took the last step and was fully exposed, so I settled in just behind the shoulder, calmed my nerves and made sure not to look at his head but to just focus on his shoulder and the shot. I stopped him and just as he started to look my way, I let the arrow fly and hit right on my mark just behind his shoulder. The slick trick blazed right through the center of his heart and he only made it about 15 yards and started wobbling until he fell and kicked a couple more times and that was it. It then sank in that I had just shot a monster that I had been waiting for this whole season and then the adrenaline kicked in. I called my buddy that I usually hunt with and told him what I just did and he didn’t believe me until he came out to where I was hunting and helped me drag him out, along with the doe. All of the stars lined up and the man upstairs was really on my side, first blessing me with a beautiful, healthy baby boy, and then with the buck of a lifetime that most people never even get an opportunity at. This got my wife fired up and now we are headed out this coming Sunday afternoon to try to let her put one of the other hit listers down on the ground, and her parents are going to get some quality time with their grandson. That is the end of my amazing journey this season, and I hope to have a follow up with my wife’s success after this coming weekend. PS… let me know what you think he gross scored, I already know, as when I took him to my taxi last night, we ran the tape across his head gear. But lets see how good you guys are.photo 3photo 2photo 1

Thanks guys. The pictures don’t even do him justice, they do not show off his size nearly as much as what he really is. After running the tape we came up with a gross score of 176 6/8″ my biggest to date and will be a hard one to top.

Thanks everyone. I am going to get our son in the woods as soon as I am able to when he is old enough and I cant wait to have my little hunting buddy who I can watch shoot a stud one day as well. Black Dog, I am in South West OH in Clermont Co. and the area I hunt is near Milford. I’m not sure if you are familiar with the area or not, but it is pretty close to I-275.
