You’re in the woods, no cell service, don’t have a sat phone. You come across a deer shot through the face with what looks like a slug. It’s bleeding from the mouth, the jaw is shattered, head is swollen, eye’s are pussed over. It’s a buck but you only have an antlerless tag. It’s late enough in the day you’ll never contact a Conservation Officer and get back by dark.

    How do you handle this?

Yes mother nature will handle it, but I was put on this earth to be a steward to the land and all creatures. Mercy is the way to go! :thumbup

I would put it out of its misery. mother nature would take care of it but it may be 2 or 3 days before it dies.

I have had to do it several times. People around here just fling shots at deer no matter how good of a shot it is. Most of the time I don’t contact the conservation officer I just play the hand that was dealt to me.

Speaking as a member of law enforcment, if a hunter approached me in this situation I would tell him/her that they did the right thing.

I would put it down !! I don’t know if I would bother calling it in unless I wanted the meat !! But I would put it out of it’s misery !!

My dad actually had it happen last year………on a doe that someone made a bad head shot on with a rifle. Same scenario………he put her down !!

I would end it’s misery and just keep it to myself. What’s a CO going to do?
