i honestly didnt think it was going to happen. money has been tight. pets have been sick and the vet bills were brutal.
my wife wants me to hunt, but was honest when she told me i might not be able to go. i was ok. life gets paid first, fun second. i dont charge hunts on any credit card she asked..”can you get some OT?” then it was like God himself wanted me to go! the very next day my boss told me i needed to work a few weekends!! HORRAY!
i havent been posting much..working and well, more working. all my broken gear has been fixed or replaced. i got a new Vortex Rangefinder. i am on the fence about it’s accuracy.
so i drive to AZ that weekend to meet my brother and two good friends. AZ couse deer hunt. i love it. this time, i feel like i have divine assistance from the guy upstairs. i need to start shooting my bow more ASAP!
Good luck on the hunt. Everything I’ve read about how skittish those little hobbits can be and how hard it is to get with in a bow shot of one. Water holes in the area might be the key from what I’ve read.
I’m def not the greates coues hunter in the world, but here’s what i can tell you.
Hunt them just like you would hunt a whitetail in the midwest. Throw spot and stalk dreams in the trash, and get a ground blind and a tree stand. Let the deer come to you, and be patient. I like to focus on fence crossings.
Coues like corn, if that’s your style. This january may be the last season that az allows corn, however. I don’t judge. IMHO, there’s no wrong way to kill your steak.
I would believe southern arizona harder to hunt than central az. There’s fewer deer down there, so spot and stalk may be the only option, but it should be your last option. Deer seem to use trails more in more densely populated areas. If you can locate an active game trail, that’s where i’d be. Water holes are ok, but they only come to tanks if they absolutely have to, and usually in january, they don’t have to.
I’ve never met anyone personally who has killed a coues with a bow using the spot and stalk method. I know there’s a lot of guys who’ve done it, i’ve just never met any of them. If you can kill a coues by spot and stalk, you have arrived.
