I am still Zero (0) for three hunts.  I hope to go tomorrow and maybe one hunt this weekend.  Hope to put some points on the board AND some turkey in the freezer.

    Go gettum Plinker!

My son and I had a great hunt on Saturday morning. We didn’t have much luck or time to hunt the previous weekend(youth season in wisconsin) but left the blind up on a fence line above my house. We headed to the blind at around 5:30am and when we got there my son got into the blind and I put out a strutting tom decoy and a breader hen. As soon as I got into the blind and zipped the door shut a tom sounded off, he was only about 70yds just inside a timber. He gobbled a few more times and then at 5:50am we hear him drop down and it still fairly dark out. Once he hit the ground he gobbled a couple more times but headed east away from the field. Well after a few minutes we could hear more turkeys dropping down inside the timber and then we could hear hens yelping and purring. We lost sight of them but this seems to be the pattern for these turkeys not to come out to this field right away off the roost.

Well about 6:20 my son says he can see turkeys coming down thru the timber towards the field that we are in. A few minutes later 5 hens are in the field and making their way towards us. I spotted more movement back into the timber and spot another hen and she starts running out towards the rest of the hens. Well just like that I see a tom following and no he is running towards the field. He get out into the field and strutts and drums and is slowly making his way towards the decoys. The hens kind of stayed about 40yds away but just seemed content. The tom made a bee-line to the decoy setup. My son grabbed his bow and readied him self for the shot. My son(Ryne) is a very good target shooter and has shot many 3D tournaments but this is the first time shooting at any game with his bow. I could hear his breathing speeding up and I could actually hear his heart beating! I talked to him to relax, breath and remember his shot sequence. The tom is now 18yds away and strutting and drumming right behind the decoys. My son drew his bow back, looked like he settled his anchor and was aiming. He held on the bird for what seemed like an hour but and he told me that one of the cross supports in the window was in the way and he couldn’t shoot. The bird came around the decoy and just like that the arrow was on its way…across his back and thru the fan! That arrow had to of just missed that birds head. The bird jumped and ran to the right of us and there was no way to get another shot once he got there. The hens started heading for the timber and then the tom followed them. Game over. He was pretty bummed but I explained that is hunting and chalk it up to an experience and try to learn from it. He said he didn’t remember if he even anchored or if he aligned his peep with the sight housing or if he followed thru with the shot. All I could do is try to explain that misses happen and it won’t be his last for sure. I was a great encounter and he did cheer up after awhile and just enjoy what we just experienced.

We plan to purchase another tag and get back out later in the season.

My season starts on Wednesday. The weather doesn’t look good but I will try to make the best of it.

    Good luck guys!

Well Tag Soup for my first week of turkey hunting here in Wisconsin. Really uneventful week. Only had one real good day of gobbling and so so action. Had plenty of jakes and hens working into decoys but I also had plenty of jakes and hens want nothing to do with the decoys. Toms just didn’t want to play. I had 2 farms that I really like to hunt but they were underwater with flooding. Wind pretty much all week also.

I have another tag for our 5th season and will purchase another tag for our 6th season.

I hope everyone else is having some close encounters.
