I went to a meat processor somewhere around Montrose Colorado one time.  It also raised bull elk for ranches.  It was unbelievable what was roaming around in his pens.   It reminds me of the view in your photo.

These “Bad Boys” are on an Elk Ranch/Farm just south of Collbran, CO.

Still quite awesome. All things equal, their body size is a bit underweight for the antler size. My 5×5 on the Uncompahgre Plateau went about 800 lbs; ;these guys would be lucky to hit 650 lbs. Doesn’t say much for the Elk  Ranching and growth hormones they are given.

Genetics plays a large part. Two years ago I saw a cow elk that would go at least 800 lbs with two yearlings that would go 350 lbs each … now I know where the 1,000 lb monsters come from.

Last time I was in your neighborhood, I saw more elk than I thought possible. Made me really want to come back during season. Maybe someday.

The bulls I saw at the elk farm were very small compared to the bulls that were killed on the Uncompahgre.   The antlers would be twice to three times the size but the body size wasn’t even close.   One of my friends has killed a couple 6x6 Uncompahgre bulls and it almost seemed that they were twice the weight of the pen raised elk.   Those dudes were a pain to pack out.  Makes my body ache just thinking about it.
