What’s the sniper round in the military?? I thought .308 (leaving the .50 cal out of the equation) For long range shooting I’d have to consider what the best of the best use ;)

As for availability only you can tell what your local dealers and stores carry.[/quote:1m9kb4ju]

Back in the Viet Nam era Carlos Hathcock used a model 70 Win. in .30-06 up until the military changed and went with .308 in the model 700 Rem.
For hunting purposes and all around shooting the 06 has more bullet weights available and loads than most any other caliber. I had an 06 but sold it. If I was to buy another caliber it would more than likely be a .270
I thought it wasn’t large enough for Elk but I have many. many friends that use this caliber on large game around here with no problems!![/color:1m9kb4ju][/size:1m9kb4ju]

I love my 7mm :X :X
I found out with close range shots it is best to hit some bone. If you hit behind the shoulder it goes through too fast. They can’t go far with no front wheels :D
.308 would be my pick for deer. :X
If you get a 30-06 they should come with a free pair of Nikes :^O

This is caused by poor bullet selection, performance, etc, etc……..Not being too fast.

Long heavy bullets might gobble up too much case capacity when seated to properly function in some short bolt actions.

I do think short actions to look better than long actions though.

I’d go .30-06.

If you get too bored down the road, rebarrel it to .35 Whelen ;)

Could have been the problem. I was using Rem. Core loct 150grain. I switched to Fusion 175 grain and I have not had a problem since.

I personally prefer a Magnum cartriage for anything over 300 yrds but any of the calibers listed will do its job if you do yours. Its just like shooting a bow shot placement is key. I personally shoot a 30-378 Weatherby for long range but its not something to be carrying around for a 100 yards shot on a whitetail if you plan on leaving anything to eat. I think the 308 will be least affected by the wind for long range but its up to you and what you are most confident in. Make sure and practice out to 500 if you plan on shooting that far so you have confidence in your equipment at that range. [=}=]

I have one of each in the calibers you mention, either will do the job(If you do yours) A slight edge in power goes to the 30.06,commercial availibility,30.06..Rifles available in each caliber to choose from are about the same..As far as one rifle to hunt all north american game I think I’d choose the .338 Federal or 338.06…just me…

I love the books on Carlos. Have you ever read them T?

7mm-08 for me. Have or had all of the above guns and 7mm-08 or .270 is all you need for Whitetail.[=}=]

Back in the day when I hunted with a rifle the .270 was my choice. I reached out and touched a few critters with this cal. [=}=]

I love a .308 win, it is more than capable of killing and real accuracy.

See if you can find a Remington Model 700 5R mil spec, it is a heavy barreled 308 with a 5r barrel and a match grade trigger straight from Remington, it will shoot with most custom rifle costing 3-4 times as much.

First 3 shots thru the tube on mine went .75″ at 100, now it will tear a ragged hole at 100 all day long with several off the shelf ammo’s. Mt best 3 shot at 100 with it is a .119″, and a .575″ 3 shot at 200 yards. 8D[/quote:36xfj5nj]
you dont have to have the 5r to shoot like that,I have 3 regular pss’s 308,300 win mag and a 7mm and they will all shoot

If you are looking to compete in long range shooting I would vote 308 Win.

Secondly, if recoil is an issue, I would vote 308 Win.

Thirdly, if you are wanting the shortest and lightest rifle, I would vote 308 Win.

However, if your not looking to compete, recoil is not an issue and your not a proponent for the small and light weight club, then I would choose the 30-06.

The 30-06 is plenty accurate for hunting, recoil is usually manageable by most people and can be obtained in light weight packages. Ammo availability is right there with the 22LR. Coupled with the fact that the 30-06 slightly out performs the 308 and has a wider selection of heavier bullet weights to choose from anchors my vote for the 30-06.

i’m going to base my decision on the phrase that you put in ; ” all north american game .” i assume bears , elk , carribou and grizzly . now i’m going to take the grizz out of the equation and assume all other game . now i want to point out i don’t like recoil , i would prefer the 7mm08 and 308 for that reason . But because of the bullet choices and the little more kinetic energy i would lean to the 30-06 .
now if you would have said ” deer rifle ” i might have made a different decision . :thumbup
