OK, I’m about halfway through Cameron Hanes book Bowhunting Trophy Blacktail[/i:1bjomex6] When I’ve gone out I’ve primarily done still hunting. I’ve seen all types of deer but have yet to connect. Cameron was saying that he’s converted over to using tree stands as his primary method.

How do you folks hunt for Blacktail? Do you switch up tactics based on what type of land do you hunt or do you make the method fit the terrain?

I still hunt mainly but have used pretty much all of the above methods. I think the terrain will dictate which method would be best.

:^O come up to Oregon Alan, we don’t hunt them blacktails until the middle of November when they are rutting! ;)

I will let the terrain dictate how I hunt, I have taken bucks from tree stands as well as stillhunting. have not taken one from a ground blind yet! It may very well be impossible to spot and stalk a big mature buck in the kind of brush that they live in up here! [=}=]

This is the type of stuff that is facinating about Blacktail. If you listen to the old timers, rattling won’t work but… I guess it does. I’ve not had the chance yet as my early season has the bucks still in velvet. By the time the rut comes, most of my season has closed up.

I voted spot and stalk because that is how I killed my firts Blacktail. But…..I have sat in treet stands on the opener for about 10 years. I have the worst tree stand luck #-I think a lot has to do with the weather also. The crappier the weather the better the hunt.(for spot and stalk I mean) And if it snows……… :X that is the magic :thumbup

Man I’d love to. I just found out that my Uncle in Oregon (Milwaukie) is getting into archery and bowhunting and his step son (my cousin) is following suit. Problem is, my schedule really does not allow much for it. When school is in session, I’m expected to be there. I’d have to advance to the district office level for me to change that.

For now I’m locked into the A-zone archery in California. If that ever changes, I’ll be giving you folks a call!

I had access to some private land two seasons ago that would have been perfect for a tree stand setup. My problem was, I didn’t have a treestand! I didn’t get back there last season and I’ve switched schools so… I’m not sure I could get back onto it.

I’m torn between a climber and a ladder stand for my first purchase. A climber would be more portable which is fitting in with what I see as my basic methods. I think I’d be limited as to what trees I coud set up in. The ladder stand would give me more choice of trees but I’d hate to have to hump it around.
