3-9 or 4-12 would be my choice personally. 4-12 seems to be a great fit even for longer shots. Check out vortex optics as well. Give them a call and they can tell you from experience what works and what doesnt.

I like the 4-16 Nikon monarch on my tikka 308. I have the bdc reticle with the yardages matched thru the spot on program out to 600yds.

I have several different scopes from high price to low price, and for the money the weaver v-series cannot be beat. I use the v series with the target dot on anything from 22-250 to 338-378 weatherby and have yet to have one fail.they are just as bright if not brighter than my leupold or Nikon monarchs, which  after owning 6 of them I can say are junk.

So, if they are junk, why did you own 6 of them? Both companies stand behind their product if there are issues, and they make all price ranges of products, all of which are at par or better for the same money. There are better, and more expensive scopes, no doubt, but for clarity, repeatability, and quality, you can’t go wrong. If money was no object, I would own a Nightforce, hands down. There is no better.

after I wrote this I was afraid you would take insult, the fact is I trade around a lot sometimes I keep what I trade for sometimes I trade for something I can get rid of quick.  In my gun safe you will find that I own Nikon monarchs both of them have been sent back to Nikon, one of them the lens retaining ring came loose and the lens was ready to fall out,the second one would not zero past 100 yards,it was sent back 4 times for this, and( it still isn’t fixed)pick up a natchezss shooter cataloge and sometimes midway even has them, and they are full various Nikons that are refurbished, that should tell you something.

Unfortunate for you to have issues. I guess I would now ask why, if it wasn’t fixed after 4 trips back, why not send it again. I know it’s something that shouldn’t happen, and I would be discouraged to, but make them give you a new one, or make it right. As a side, there are many companies that sell refurbs to outlet houses.

Why did I not send it again? well every time I sent it in it was gone for 3 to 4 months, and would say the same thing on the return note. Dissassembled, newsprings and recalibrated, so after the last time,i figured I would just put it on a 22 and be done with.which I might add it works wonderful for. As for outlet houses selling refurbs, just take a look at what they sell the most of.
Now I did not mean to upset you  about Nikon scopes since that is obviously what you like, but I will tell you my first passion is guns, and has been for 30 years.i have run across some cheap good stuff and some high dollar bad stuff,a lot of people buy nikon because they make one heck of a camera, and because of that they pay high prices for their scopes.
I have looked through a lot of glass in my short time, even a few nightforces, but for the money none impresses more than the weaver v-series.

Actually, Nikon is not my favorite. I have had good luck with the ones I have. I also have many other brands, some expensive, some not. The three vari-x 3’s that I have are nice, as well as the vortex razor is very nice.  I don’t consider Nikons high end by any means, but they have good glass for the money and good features. Weaver makes some good stuff but ironically, I have a good shooting buddy that sent one back for repair and has NEVER gotten it back after 13 months. Here again, probably not the norm, but stuff happens. As I said, too bad for you to have issues with Nikon, but so does every other company at one time or another. I too, have been around the gun world block a few times, you’re not alone.

After looking around I think I’ve settled on a Bushnell Legend HD 3×9 40mm DOA 600.  Anyone have experience with this scope?

The advise that I would give is to match the scope to the intended purpose and range of shots being considered. A 3-9 in my opinion is good for about 250yds., if considering longer ranges, more power would be suggested. From experience, I can tell you that if you want to use the 3-9 out to 600yds., that would be tough.

I’d shop around a bit more …{#emotions_dlg.mathews_peace} … check out the Simmons and Vortex scopes if you are limited to a $250 budget.  Dollar for dollar, they are far better than the Bushnell, IMHO.

I’ve had good luck with and liked the Leupold scopes, especially the quality of their ‘low-end’ optics. I have a VX1 1-4x20mm on a .300 Savage for about $250, but that’s only a 250 yd Elk Gun, but good optics. Excellent for hunting close in thickets, oakbrush, and dark timber. Not made for the cross canyon shot.

My pre-’64 Winchester Model 70 in .30-06 shoots .6 MOA groups and is good to 600 yds on Elk. For that I need a 15x or 18x scope with parallax adjustment. It was a toss up for me between a Leupold MK-4, NightForce NXS, and Swarovski Z5. I settled on the Swaro Z5 3.5-18x 44 mm with Ballistic Turret and 4W reticule.

Thanks for al the feedback guys….I was kind of leaning towards the Bushnell products simply because I can get them at wholesale from my company…. Also very interested in the Vortex lineup as they are  headquartered about 20 minutes from my house.
